ELEVEN – MEMBER BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR THE GHANA RAILWAY DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (GRDA) INAUGURATED


The Deputy Minister for Railway Development Hon. Kwaku Asante-Boateng (MP) on Tuesday 14th September inaugurated the newly appointed eleven (11) Member Board of Directors for the Ghana Railway Development Authority at the Ministry of Railway Development.

The Inauguration of the Board is in line with the Railway Act 2008 (Act 779) which establishes the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) with the objective of creating a licensing and regulatory framework, in order to provide a safe and secure rail transport system, as well as create opportunities for private sector participation in the provision of rail transport services in the country.

The Board of Directors, under the Chairmanship of Dr. Martin Amogre Ayanore will ensure collaboration with other public, private and international agencies necessary for the performance of its functions, advise the Government on railway matters generally, and subject to Ministerial directives, perform the function of a railway regulator.

The other members of the Board are Hon Kwaku Asante-Boateng (MP), Mr. Ernest Yaw Owusu, Ing. Ernest Kwame Obeng, Mr. Michael Achagwe Luguje, Mr. Jonathan Kwasi Azasoo, Mr. Edwin Allotey Acquaye, Dr. Emmanuel Adem Opoku, Madam Sophia Abena Tijani and Mr. Fridoline Kwesi Bansah.

Addressing them after administering the Oath of Office and the Oath of Secrecy, Hon. Kwaku Asante-Boateng (MP) charged the Governing Board of the GRDA to champion President Akufo-Addo’s vision to revamp and modernize the country’s poor railway network which will require hard work and commitment from the Board. The Deputy Minister also encouraged the general public including private, public individuals and organizations and all other stakeholders to provide the Board and the GRDA the needed support to ensure the sustainable development of Ghana’s railway network. He then urged the Board members to eschew absenteeism from Board meetings and remain committed and diligent in the discharge of their duties.

The Board Chairperson, Dr. Martin Amogre Ayanore on behalf of his colleagues, thanked President Akufo-Addo for the trust reposed in them. He said His Team will be guided by the Railway Act in the discharge of their duties. He also assured the Minister for Railway Development and the CEO of the GRDA that the Board will see to it that Institutional policies are strengthened to enable the GRDA achieve its mandate.

He condemned the stealing of railway items by some unscrupulous persons in the society and assured that the Governing Board will put in measures to address the menace. He finally appealed to the general public to support the Ghana Railway Development Authority in the move to revamp the railway sector to enhance the economic growth of the country.
