The Minister for Railway Development, Hon. John-Peter Amewu has charged the newly inaugurated Governing Board of the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) to work with the spirit of urgency in order to ensure President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision to revamp the railway sector becomes a reality before the end of his second term of office.
According to the Minister, the railway sector has been left to deteriorate for quite a long time hence, the Governing Board Members should brace themselves for a lot of challenging tasks and come up with policies that will develop the railway sector into a vibrant, modern, robust and integrated system that will serve as a catalyst for the transformation of the economy.
The Minister made these comments when he inaugurated a ten (10) member Board of Directors for the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) in Accra on Tuesday, 25th January 2022. The Board is chaired by Mr. Daniel Kwame Adzogble. Other members are Togbe Adzimah V, Mr. Buthelezi Wilson Kwasie Akakpo, Dr. Samuel Kpabitey Ekow Azu, Hon. Adjei Kwasi Boateng,Mr. Joseph Appiah Boateng, Mr. Eric Owusu also known traditionally as Obrempon Hima Dekyi XIV , Togbega Tsedze atakora VII, Dr. Nuworza Kugbey and the Acting Managing Director of GRCL, Mr. Lord Laud Quansah.
Hon. Amewu stated that the inauguration of the Governing Board of GRCL is in accordance with Article 70 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and the relevant provisions of the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992). He tasked them to be abreast with the current issues bothering on the sector to enable them formulate the right policies that would make the sector more vibrant.
He mentioned that the GRCL was established to provide freight, parcel and passenger rail services, until the establishment of the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), the company also managed assets of the railway and regulated activities of the sector.
Speaking on behalf of the Governing Board, the Board Chairman, Mr. Daniel Kwame Adzogble expressed the warmest appreciation for the opportunity given them to serve their country stating that as a team, they are ready to work hard to ensure that the railway sector becomes active and repositioned as an efficient transport mode that would provide the requisite support for the socio – economic development of the country as per the President‘s vision.
