President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians of an effective and modern railway network in the country by the end of his four year tenure.

Speaking at his second State of the Nation Address on the floor of Parliament on Thursday 8th February, 2018, President Akufo-Addo said his promise to revamp the railway sector is on course.

On the Takoradi to Paga Railway line, President Akufo-Addo said government has made significant progress. He said Government is in the final stages of agreeing with a significant investor on the terms of Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) agreement for the Takoradi –Kumasi Railway line and will soon be presented before Parliament.  President Akufo-Addo further hinted that there was a contractor on site for the construction of the Kojokrom to Manso section which formed part of the Takoradi to Kumasi railway line.

On the Eastern Railway Line project, President Akufo-Addo announced that the required process has commenced to select a suitable contractor for the Accra to Tema to Kumasi railway line project. Construction was expected to begin this year.

President Akufo-Addo further noted that the Central Spine Line, Kumasi to Paga was also receiving attention. Government was seeking advice from Consultants on the best model for the project.

Speaking on the Ghana-Burkina Interconnectivity Connectivity Project, President Akufo-Addo said the two countries are in constant discussions as to realize the Tema-Ouagadougou railway line project. He expressed confidence that deliberations would conclude and actual construction would commence by the third quarter of this year.

President Akufo-Addo has said “One of the legacies I want to leave is a modern railway network from Accra to Paga which has interconnectivity with Burkina Faso”.
