TRADERS ASSOCIATION TO PARTNER RAILWAYS SECTOR TO DEVELOP ULTRA-MODERN SHOPPING COMPLEX

In an attempt to decongest the main Railway Station in Accra, the Kantamanto Rail Line Joint Traders Association has expressed its intention to partner the Ministry of Railways Development to develop a modern shopping complex in the Central Business District.

The leadership of the Association has called on the Minister of Railways Development, Hon. Joe Ghartey to seek his Ministry’s support to the realisation of their vision.

The Communications Director of the Association, Pastor Opoku Afreh noted that his group has run to the Railways Ministry to seek collaborative support because it acknowledges the Ministry as the true owners of the land they occupy for their commercial activities. He said for such a significant project, it is only fair to seek the support and involvement of the true owners of the land.

In his response, the Railways Development Minister, Hon. Joe Ghartey expressed his appreciation of the efforts of the group, saying the Ministry intended to redevelop the entire Accra Station and have consulted a world renowned architect, David Adjaye to redesign the station into a State of the Art Station.

He said the Ministry has no misgivings regarding the development or vision of the Association, however, their design must be consistent with the Ministry’s plans of restructuring and transforming the Accra Railway Station, into modern multipurpose infrastructure that would facilitate socioeconomic activities for the benefit of society.

The Hon. Minister proposed an emergency meeting with the various consultants engaged by the Association to discuss the subject matter in order to come into a common understanding, in respect of the development agenda of all parties.

The Association believes building an ultra-modern shopping complex will not only decongest the unplanned and scattered commercial activities that distract daily railway service but also give that part of the Central Business District (CDB) a meaningful outlook to support and enhance smooth rail passenger shuttle and freight services at the Railway Station.

The group has encountered unpleasant history of countless fire outbreaks ravaging goods worth several billions of Cedis, a situation the new project will guard against with modern fire control mechanisms.

According to the Communications Director, the Association is almost through with all its consultancy engagements and that they need the strong support and involvement of the Ministry to kick start the project which they strongly believe would facilitate and enhance smooth freight and p   assenger shuttle service in the CDB.
