On Friday January 4, 2019, The Minister for Railways Development, Hon. Joe Ghartey was at the test run of the Accra to Tema sub-urban passenger service. The Minister was accompanied by the Minister for Information, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Staff of the Ministry and officials of the Ghana Railways Company Limited (GRCL).
This was at the invitation of the Managing Director of GRCL, Mr. John Essel. After over an hour ride to and from Accra-Tema, the officials observed that encroachers are back along the rehabilitated lines. Therefore, the Ministry together with its Agency (GRCL) have postponed the reopening of the passenger service for two weeks, whilst steps are taken to secure the lines.
Speaking in an interview after the inspection, Hon. Joe Ghartey did not mince words saying, the Ministry cannot allow the interest of a small minority, who are acting illegally to take precedence over the interest of Ghana. He warned people encroaching on railway lands to advice themselves.
The activities of encroachers threaten the development of Ghana’s railway sector. It also threatens the opportunity that railways affords the country to transform its economy. The cost of doing business , the cost of transportation and food, the congestion on the roads, the reduction of inflation and the increase in economic activities along the railway corridors are but a few of the benefits of the modern railway network, envisaged by President Akufo-Addo will bring to Ghana.
